Pond Plantings

The Sun Pond was designed with two objectives in mind: first to create an environment attractive to native flora and fauna, and second to act as an educational tool, so that visitors might observe a vernal pool ecosystem firsthand. Native plants at the Sun Pond include flag iris, cat of nine tails, and winterberry, as well as other plants that don’t object to wet feet! Resident landscape architect Mamie Wytrwal worked on the planting plan with two local Girl Scouts, who received Gold Awards for their successful replication of a natural, diverse pond’s edge.
