Upper Grounds

This vast area is often thought of as just the main lawn, but in its entirety comprises many popular features from the Butterfly Garden to the Rhododendron Garden. The 0.2 mile Orchard Loop trail encircles the main lawn and runs under the Grape Arbor and past the Sun Pond. Wooden benches are staggered every 200 feet along this stone dust trail, and picnic tables dot the sprawling main lawn, the perfect place for a game of catch or a nap under an apple tree. The Upper Grounds have the largest collection of specimen trees in the Arboretum—an amur cork tree, several dawn redwoods, a Kentucky coffee tree, a sweet gum, and a Persian parrotia to name a few—and are beautiful 365 days a year!
